Gevonden Vlaanderen
Every year, tens of thousands of bikes disappear in Flanders — and most owners never see them again. Johan, a retired police officer with a background in criminology, decided to do something about it. His initiative, Gevonden Vlaanderen, helps people register their bikes easily and recover them faster.

100,000 Stolen Bikes: One Solution
Johan, a retired police officer with a criminology background, wanted to keep making a difference after his career. That's how BikeBank started — a project for the province of Antwerp. His idea was simple: get as many people as possible to register their bike through a website. It's not a trivial concern. Around 100,000 bikes are stolen each year in Belgium, and only 30,000 of those end up as police reports.
"People often think they'll never see their bike again," Johan told me. "They've lost the paperwork, can't remember the brand or colour, let alone the frame number. Filing a report feels pointless."
I got behind the project straight away
Johan already had a website and wasn't happy with his developer. So he started looking around and sent out a few emails.
My reply stood out, he told me later. I was one of the few who actually wrote back, and I jumped straight into his project. Johan found that inspiring.
When we met, I gave him a clear overview of how we could take his idea further. He had a practical, functional mindset that matched my technical approach well. Together we decided to push the concept a step further.
We chose a new name: Gevonden Vlaanderen. Then we focused on making the transition smooth for all users: end users, municipalities, police zones and the province.
Clear overview
A design that fits the client's image.
Easy to use
The client has access to the site and can make changes themselves, so they have full ownership.
Built for end users
The website got a portal where end users can register their own bike.
Dynamic form fields
The new website came with some real challenges. Depending on the type of object, the system needs to show different input fields automatically. That dynamic programming called for a smart approach. On top of that, the province's website had to link seamlessly with Gevonden Vlaanderen's.
During the transition from the previous developer, I also resolved a number of issues and followed them up carefully. The result is a fully custom platform, including:
A collaboration I'm proud of!
When the new website went live, Johan could finally see what had been happening behind the scenes. He got a clearer overview and could handle admin tasks with ease. With visitor tracking tools, he now keeps an eye on his impact too.
It's always good to hear someone is 100% satisfied with my work. Together with Johan, I'm looking forward to continuing to improve the website and grow his project.

"Honestly? I wasn't sure about migrating the website to a new provider. But everything went very smoothly. I'm really happy with what Yordi has done so far."
